Safaricom, Government and Vodafone Launch Ksh.240m Digital Skills Program

Kenya’s leading telco Safaricom through its charity arm, the Safaricom Foundation, has partnered with the government and Vodafone Foundation to launch an ambitious $1.9m (KES 240 million) digital scaling skills programme.

This program aims to drive transformative changes in Kenya’s educational sector by equipping teachers with essential digital skills that can be integrated into the teaching process.

The programme, which was launched on Wednesday has specifically been designed to scale digital literacy skills among teachers across 35 teachers training colleges nationwide.  The initiative seeks to create a long-term impact by equipping these teachers with knowledge to help them integrate digital skills in their classrooms for improved educational outcomes.

With a focus on teacher training, the program will indirectly prepare future generations of students for an advanced digital world and a technology-driven economy.

It is part of Safaricom Foundation’s 2023-2027 strategy which focuses on improving the schools’ infrastructure and training teachers on digital skills.

It aims to strengthen the capacity of teachers to integrate and use technology skills for effective teaching and learning.

According to a statement from Safaricom, the goal is to enhance the capacity of teachers to deliver digital education and to improve education outcomes for learners in primary and secondary schools.

“This programme reflects our commitment to strengthening the digital capacity of teachers across Kenya. By providing these colleges with the necessary digital tools, we are preparing future teachers to deliver high-quality education that integrates technology,‘’ said Joseph Ogutu Safaricom Foundation Chairman.

‘’This investment will positively impact both teachers and learners as we work towards improved education outcomes in the digital age,” Ogutu added.

Over the past two decades, the Safaricom Foundation has implemented over 4,000 community projects impacting more than 12 million Kenyans. These efforts, it says,  have focused on the Foundation’s core pillars of health, education, and economic empowerment, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The new digital skills programme will also include renovating existing ICT facilities or constructing new ones where necessary. So far, eight colleges have already benefited from the initiative.
