HMD tops Platinum EcoVadis sustainability rating for the second year running
HMD Global, the maker of Nokia phones has attained a Platinum EcoVadis 2023 Sustainability Rating for the second year running, the company announced on Friday.
HMD is in the top 1% of businesses and 98 per cent of companies audited for their commitment to sustainable practices in the manufacturing of communications equipment.
‘We are thrilled to receive the Eco Vadis Platinum Sustainability rating for the second year running. ‘’ Jean-Francois Baril, Co-Founder, Chairman and CEO of HMD Global said.
‘’Combined with a steadfast commitment to delivering high-quality, affordable mobile devices to consumers around the world, every single one of us at HMD is excited for our future of designing innovative products that endure, reducing electronic waste, helping people keep their mobile devices for longer and making a positive impact on the planet,’ he added.
EcoVadis, the world’s largest and most trusted provider of business sustainability ratings, are evidence-based and cover four sustainability themes: Environment, Labour and Human Rights, Ethics and Sustainable Procurement.
HMD says the Platinum Rating signals its advanced structured and proactive sustainability approach. It serves as an indicator of positive intent as assessed companies strive to improve their sustainability management performance and drive impact.
The HMD Global sustainability rating comes after the company recently announced that it’s transitioning to a new multi-brand portfolio strategy. The strategy according to a report by Nokiamob.net would ‘’encompass an HMD original product range, alongside Nokia phones and those from other partners. ‘’
In its recently released Sustainability Progress Report covering the fiscal year 2022, the company also provided some interesting insights into what it has been doing to reduce carbon emissions. It had a myriad of approaches from recycled packaging, to phasing out chargers, to long-term net-zero commitments among others.
‘’At HMD, reporting on our environmental, social and governance standards is so much more than a tick box exercise to meet the requirements expected of today’s businesses. That’s why sustainability is legitimately wired into our business, our products and our culture. Because we know our success as a business – and the future of life on earth – depends on it.’’ Jean-François said.
