Just a few days after appointing Adil Arshed Khawaja as its new board chairman, telecommunications giant Safaricom has announced a raft of changes in its top leadership.
The new appointments have seen Esther Masese appointed the new Chief Financial Services Officer, charged with providing strategic leadership and oversight to Safaricom’s Financial Services Business.
Esther joins Safaricom from KCB Bank where she was the Director of Corporate Banking since 2021. Her experience in the finance sector spans over 15 years, working with top institutions including Stanbic Bank where she worked for 10 years.
She comes in to replace Boniface Mungania who has been holding the position in an acting capacity. Mungania has been appointed Director Public Sector Digital Transformation, tasking him to develop partnerships with the public sector in driving digital transformation.
“I would like to thank Boniface Mungania for his leadership of the Financial Services Team over the last 8 months,” Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa said, “During this period, we have made great strides in delivering our Financial Services mission, including receiving regulatory approval for some of our strategic initiatives, as well as launching platforms such as M-PESA Go and supporting the government to launch the Hustler Fund.”
Zizwe Awuor Vundla has been appointed the company’s director of Brand and Marketing. Prior to her appointment at Safaricom, Vundla was Head of Marketing and Innovation at Diageo, South Africa since 2019. The seasoned brand and marketing manager previously worked for Proctor and Gamble.
Welcoming the newly appointed executives, Ndegwa said they will play a critical role in supporting continued delivery, enable performance ambition, and “build on the progress made so far through our agile transformation.”
