Kenyan Team Bags 1st Position at the Huawei 6th Global ICT competition


A team of students from Kenyatta University has emerged top at the Huawei Sixth Global ICT competition, beating 132 teams from 43 countries and regions. The 2021-2022 phase of the competition attracted students from 2000 universities and colleges in 85 countries. The competition attracts nearly 6000 students from Kenya alone.

Huawei has been running the contest annually to provide students with a platform to compete and exchange ideas, enhance their ICT knowledge and practical skills, and foster their capabilities to innovate by using new technologies and platforms.

The competition is in three categories: Practice, Innovation and Industry.

This round of competition attracted the highest number of contestants in history. More than 150,000 students who took part in the competition were drawn from 50 Sub-Saharan African universities.

The team from Kenyatta University which bagged the top prize had Astone Onyango, Stephen Katona and Cathrine Wanja, under the stewardship of their Lecturer Michael Munyao. The team attracted praises from judges for designing an innovative program for detecting early childhood pneumonia, using Huawei’s AI technology.

Another Kenyan team from Machakos University scooped the third prize in the Network track with yet another team from Kenyatta University winning third prize in the Cloud track.

Huawei has set a huge footprint in Africa through various initiatives and its affordable devices. In Kenya, the company has set up ICT academies in more than 50 universities and colleges. Through these initiatives, learners interact with the latest technologies in Networking, Cloud, 5G and AI.

Huawei Enterprise’s president of global partner development and sales Xiao Haijun said the competition aims to promote the healthy development of the ICT talent ecosystem and support the integration of industry and education.”
