Tecno Camon 18 Premier Camera Review

The Tecno Camon 18 Premier was the main headline for the recently unveiled TECNO Camon 18 Series.

Tecno Mobile officially unveiled this series back in October and the devices in this series include the Camon 18, Camon 18P and the Camon 18 Premier.

We already did the unboxing video for the Camon 18 Premier; in case you missed it you can check it below.

In this article, we will be focusing on the cameras which is one of the key features that Tecno is pushing on this device. The Tecno Camon 18 Premier on the rear packs a triple camera setup featuring a 64-megapixel primary camera; a gimbal-stabilized 12-megapixel sensor, and an 8-megapixel periscope zoom lens that supports 60x hyper zoom.

One of the top camera features is the moon probe that captures images of the moon using the Galileo algorithm.

The selfie camera on the other hand is a 32-megapixel sensor.

At the launch, Tecno had so much to say about the main Camera on the Camon 18 Premier. The company described the phone as its most advanced pro-camera phone, thanks to features like the ultra-steady Gimbal Camera; Ultra-clear 60X Hyper Zoom; Self-portrait master.

“We always seek for breakthroughs of product and technology to inspire our consumers to unlock the world of possibilities. The digital revolution with the rise of new generations brings the latest trend of film making through a smartphone device. The CAMON 18 Premier is the first TECNO product to take Ultra-steady Gimbal Camera technology innovations to create a brand-new experience to users, ” said Stephan Ha, General Manager of TECNO.

The Gimbal Camera is my favourite here and it’s probably the first we are seeing on a smartphone at that price range. Don’t get me wrong but I have used phones that also offer some good video stability.

With this feature, you can achieve that perfect video for your vlog or youtube channel. Tecno has added what it’s calling unparalleled anti-shaking technology at 300% the effectiveness of other smartphones without the anti-shaking technology. When combined with a wide-angle lens, the Camon 18 Premier is capable of 109° wide-angle shooting, allowing users to create truly beautiful videos anywhere, while doing anything, with sublime clarity.

Check the video below that I shared on our official Twitter page.

We are also getting a number of camera features including AI Cam, Beauty, Portrait, Super Night, Slow Motion, Panorama, Super Macro and of course super moon among others.

The Supermoon is the feature I enjoyed using the most. It produces great shots of the moon. Check sample moon shots below:

The CAMON 18 Premier uses a 5X periscope lens and Galileo algorithm engine, which Tecno says accesses multiple frames and gathers pixel information to enhance resolution and clarity. By combining the 5X optical zoom capability with up to 12X AI algorithm-based digital zoom, users can achieve an incredible 60X hybrid zoom and travel as far as the moon in photography, elevating smartphone astrophotography to spectacular levels.

The selfie camera on the Tecno Camon 18 Premier is a 32-megapixel sensor. We are also getting a number of camera modes added including film, AI Cam, beauty, portrait, and super night.

The selfie camera produces some decent photos. Sharp detailed, vibrant colours and a decent dynamic range is also pretty good.

Check sample selfie shots below under different modes.

The bottom line, the Tecno Camon 18 Premier is a good camera phone just as Tecno is selling it. The phone is available for Kshs 39,099. You can also read our Camon 18 review here.
