TECNO Spark 7P Review

The TECNO Spark 7P has been selling in the Kenyan market for more than a month now. TECNO Mobile officially launched the device in the market in May this year targeting Gen Z with its sizable high-refreshing display and a triple camera setup.

At the launch Stephen Ha, General Manager of TECNO Mobile said, ‘’TECNO SPARK 7 series are the ones what reflect our promise to the Gen-Z the most with the most advanced technologies like the BIGGER and BETTER display to bring them immersive cinema experience at the fingertips.’’

TECNO’s Spark series has always been our favourite and all the phones we have interacted with within these series are pretty decent in their price range. The Spark 7 is no exception.

What’s in the box?

The TECNO Spark 7P comes packaged in an orange box with a large glossy SPARK 7P blue font splashed on top. The review unit we had was the 4/128 GB version in Alps Blue color. The phone is also available in Magnet Black, Spruce Green, and Summer Mojito colour options.

Inside the box you get the The Spark 7P smartphone itself, a charging cable, a 5V/2A wall charger, a SIM tray ejection pin, a set of headphones and silicone soft case. Interesting that TECNO did not add any user manuals in the box but the good thing is you can check the guide in the smartphone settings.

Design and Display

The Spark 7P is the successor to the Spark 6 and comes with some slight improvements.  It comes with a completely refreshed design. Instead of a circular camera array, TECNO Spark 7P has a more familiar rectangular bump with cameras arranged vertically on the left.

The phone looks pretty good for sure and is a worthy upgrade to the Spark 6. It’s also a huge phone featuring a 6.8 inch display with some medium sized bezels. There is also a teardrop shaped notch that houses the selfie camera on the top central part of the display panel. We are also getting a  90 Hz display and I will give TECNO a plus here. This addition of a 90 Hz panel shows how smartphones, especially those in the budget and midrange category are getting better and better.

Colour reproduction, contrast are all okay, same for the viewing angles. Nothing really to complain here for a phone at this price range.

On the left side we have the trays for your 2 SIM cards and a microSD card. On the right side we can see two volume buttons and just below them there’s the power/lock button.

The top is completely empty while the bottom has a 3.5mm audio jack, a noise-canceling microphone, a microUSB port and a speaker grille.  I wish TECNO had incorporated a modern USB Type-C port on this device though.

TECNO Spark 7P Performance and battery life

I have used all the devices in the Spark series and must admit TECNO has been making improvements and adjustments on each of them.

Tecno Spark 7P runs on Android 11 with HiOS 7.5 on top. The phone is powered by the octa-core MediaTek Helio G70 SoC, along with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

The 4GB of RAM is quite enough for a smartphone of this level. You can switch between several applications and they will not be unloaded from the memory. The 128GB storage should also be enough to store all your files. The system on this hardware handles everything pretty well, there were no serious delays or lags throughout our interaction with this device.

Tecno Spark 7P  has a 5000mAh battery capacity similar to what we saw in the Spark 6 and this should probably be one of the key selling points on this phone. This battery guarantees you a 2-day battery life which is quite impressive. There’s no fast charging support and charging the phone to full capacity takes like 3 hours. But again, the battery performance is really what we expected, nothing much to say here.

Cameras

For the cameras,  the Tecno Spark 7P features a triple rear camera setup that comprises a 16-megapixel primary sensor. We are also an 8-megapixel selfie camera sensor at the front along with dual LED flash. The cameras do their job just fine, especially in good lighting.  Night photos are also pretty good in case of light and are even better with the super night mode on. Check sample shots below.

Should you buy the TECNO Spark 7P?

For anyone looking for Khs.15,000 and below device, the Spark 7P is a good buy. The display is excellent with an impressive 90 Hz panel and the SoC is energy-efficient, stable, and able to handle everything just fine.

The design is also very good and modern and the battery life is quite impressive. The phone is currently available in the market for Ksh.15,000.
