Huawei Founder and Chief Executive officer Ren Zhengfei in an interview with Sky News stated that the UK “won’t say no to us” in matters of 5G deployment. This comes after the US banned the Chinese tech firm from trading with US tech firms.
But, the UK is considering ways to have Huawei on-board in preparing for 5G. In an interview, Ren stated the UK had a “very important” decision to make. “I think they won’t say no to us as long as they go through those rigorous tests and look at it in a serious manner. I think if they do say no, it won’t be to us.” He added.
So far two telcos in the UK have confirmed selling Huawei’s 5G powered smartphones in the country to complement their on-going 5G rollout.
However, remember the UK have its Brexit issues underway. Last week, a visiting US national security expert to the UK stated that Huawei’s involvement in Britain’s 5G network could wait until the Brexit matters have been resolved.
Despite the red alarms that the US government has been sending to countries to reject Huawei’s 5G equipment over fears of espionage, Huawei has so far secured over 50 5G commercial contracts as per their July statement. Most of the contracts are said to be in Europe (28).
So far South Africa has been the first African country to welcome Huawei infrastructure on 5G rollout. Huawei was offered the lion’s share in their local market, followed by Ericsson and Nokia in a way to show their generosity to allowing foreigners to trade with China.
