Xiaomi sold 1 Million Redmi Note 4 smartphones in just 30 days in India
If you are a keen follower of the smartphone market you will agree that Xiaomi is probably one of the biggest smartphone brands. The Chinese firm has been doing pretty well in its home country China and even in india.
In fact, in India, Xiaomi has ranked as the most preferred smartphone brand for Indian Android users looking to upgrade their smartphones in 2017. A report from research firm Analytics notes that Xiaomi beat brands like Samsung and even Apple to top the preferred brands chart for the next smartphone purchase with 26% share.
Last month Xiaomi launched the Redmi 4 smartphone in India, and now the company claims it has already sold one million units in just 30 days. This is a very huge milestone for the company which as I mentioned at the start of this article has been enjoying a huge market share in India.
The announcement was made by Xiaomi’s India Managing Director and Vice President Manu Kumar Jain through a tweet from his official twitter handle. The sales of the Redmi 4 smartphone were made through flash sales and pre-orders.

But should this surprise us? Not really. The company’s budget smartphones in the Redmi lineup have been highly popular thanks to the competitive pricing matched with some really good specifications. The Redmi 4 for example is priced at Rs 6,999 for the 2GB RAM + 16GB storage version, while the 3GB RAM+32GB storage version is priced at Rs 8,999. Locally when converted in Kenyan shillings it comes to about Kshs.11,300 and Ksh.14,500, not too much to spend on a good smartphone.
The last time the Kenyan tech media interacted with Xiaomi was in April last year when they announced plans to venture into the Kenyan market. In fact, I was among the few people who had a meeting with some of their representatives at the Norfolk Hotel and were given the Redmi Note 2 smartphone for review. Trust me, it as a great phone fit for the Kenyan market.
I don’t know what happened in between because since then we have heard little about the brand. It is so hard to even get any Xiaomi smartphone on Kenyan shops. Though one can pre-order one from sites like Avechi.com, which again has to be shipped in.
The brand already has presence in countries like South Africa and one would expect a country like Kenya to be their top target for obvious reasons.
Back to The Redmi 4, the smartphone comes with a 5.5-inch full HD display and 13MP rear camera. It has three different memory/storage variants – the 2GB RAM/32GB model costs the 3GB RAM/32GB and the 4GB RAM/64GB model. It is powered by 1.4GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 processor. It runs Android 6.0.1 and is powered by a 4100mAh.
