Two students from Nova Pioneer Boys High School Eldoret, Kon Lual Ajok and Ian Mwadiloh, have been crowned winners of the 2025 Young Scientists Kenya (YSK) National Science and Technology Exhibition with their blockchain-powered project, Afronomy Chain. The web system enables real-time tracking of public funds from collection to expenditure, aiming to curb corruption.
Their innovation was selected from 130 student-led STEM projects across the country, earning them a four-year Strathmore University scholarship, KES 100,000, smartphones, and an all-expenses-paid trip to Ireland to represent Kenya at the Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition 2026.
“This is not our first time participating in the exhibition. We tried in 2023 and emerged second runners-up. We believe we are a testimony of failing, trying again, and coming back stronger,” said Ajok.
Barani Secondary School’s Angela Debra and Ferdinand Emmanuel from Kilifi County took the runners-up spot with their Smart Solar-Jiko Hybrid Water Distiller, while a special award went to Edward Wara Kitsao and Patience Elizabeth Ninah of Salvation Army Likoni High School for The Visually Impaired for their self-powered wheelchair innovation.
The exhibition, held in Nairobi from 5th to 9th August, brought together more than 1,000 students from all 47 counties under the theme “Using STEM to Drive Towards a Sustainable Future.”
Speaking during the awards ceremony, ICT and Digital Economy Principal Secretary John Tanui praised the young innovators for their creativity and problem-solving spirit. “Innovation is not just about creating something new, but daring to solve problems that others accept as permanent. In this room, I see the architects of a Kenya where science, technology, and creativity form the foundation of prosperity for every citizen,” he said.
Since its inception in 2018, YSK has engaged over 250,000 students, supported 1,700 STEM projects, and connected young innovators to scholarships, mentorship, and global opportunities.
