Spiro Launches Africa’s First All-Women EV Assembly Line

Electric vehicle (EV) company Spiro has launched an all-women assembly line for motor and charger production. The company says this initiative aims to promote gender inclusivity and advance EV infrastructure in the country.
This is in line with the current initiative being spearheaded by the Spiro Academy aimed at upskilling and creating social impact in the local communities in countries where Spiro is currently operating.
According to the company, this initiative not only empowers women in the workforce but also enhances Spiro’s manufacturing capabilities to meet the growing demand for sustainable mobility solutions.
The Spiro’s all-women motor assembly line is set to produce motors daily, ensuring efficiency and precision in manufacturing.
Speaking on Tuesday, March 25, Kaushik Burman, the CEO of Spiro, said, “We are aiming to assemble at least ten times what we are currently assembling in Kenya with the long-term goal being having more than fifty thousand Spiro bikes on the road this year.’’
‘’Spiro is an ecosystem, we are not just a two wheeler electric motorcycle company, we are a tech driven company, from energy provision to emobility to reduction of carbon emissions to integration of artificial intelligence in our battery models, the goal here is to power Africa with Africa centred solutions with the slogan Buy Africa, Build Africa,” he added.
Raymond Camina, the Deputy Country Head in Kenya, revealed plans to onboard world-class partners who will not only ensure quality but also transfer knowledge to Kenya’s manufacturing sector, enhancing the technological development of Spiro bikes.
Expressing excitement about seeing Spiro bikes on Kenyan roads, Camina affirmed the company’s commitment to affordability, adaptability, and expansion, including plans to reach the county level.
“This is the only plant in the world where women have been given the forefront in terms of assembling the most important components onto a bike. It goes to show how important it is that we are paying attention to details,” he said.
With over 24,000 electric bikes and 17 million battery swaps completed, Spiro is accelerating its expansion by establishing state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities for high-value EV components. Spiro says it remains dedicated to maintaining gender balance as a signal of empowerment across its six operating markets in line with the sustainable development goal number five on gender equality and empowering women and girls.
Spiro’s investment in women-led manufacturing marks a significant milestone in the African EV industry, paving the way for a more inclusive and sustainable future.
The company has also launched a new production line dedicated to manufacturing home chargers daily for both residential use and battery swap stations. Additionally, it has unveiled a fast charger line that will produce units daily, strategically deploying them to key locations to improve EV charging accessibility.
