Safaricom Decode Earth Arena: A Call for Climate Resilience and Innovation


Safaricom Decode, the telco’s annual Engineering Summit finally ended on Thursday. The event brought together young engineers, scientists, tech enthusiasts, innovators and stakeholders to engage in knowledge exchange, discussions and envision the future of engineering together.

Under the theme “ Charting East Africa’s Digital Destiny” the event also seeks to champion young innovator’s role in transforming Kenya’s engineering landscape through innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability.

At the event, Safaricom hosted the Earth Arena session to discuss climate resilience and innovation.  

The session commenced with an address by Fred Waithaka, Safaricom’s Acting Chief Corporate Affairs Officer who emphasized the need for building climate-ready infrastructure to protect communities from the ever-growing impacts of climate change. 

‘’Resilience is not just a concept but a necessity for securing our collective future,’’ Waithaka said. 

It also included a keynote that explored the role of technology in repositioning Africa towards reaching a net-zero emission level by the year 2050. The session took deep dives into bold ideas and innovative solutions that can transform the region’s sustainability efforts. 

During a high-level panel engaging panel discussion on Innovative Financing for Climate Resilience, experts from different sectors discussed the critical role of financial strategies in tackling climate challenges in Africa. The session highlighted how digital transformation can merge with green investment to unlock funding for sustainable solutions. The panel also shared a lot of actionable insights regarding the urgency of resource mobilization and the leverage of financial tools in ensuring effective interventions to address climate change impacts in the region.

Another highlight of the session was a masterclass centred on Climate Data Transparency. In what ways can open data be leveraged to revolutionize the way decisions are made so that all organizations can plan in wise ways to drive more impactful climate solutions, which in turn will change how they operate, which will allow the practice to transform, in turn accomplishing more important solutions for them? Attendees got valuable insights into whose power the transformative potential of open data is to address challenges. 

Dr. Srinivasan Rajavelu, Senior Telco Solutions Architect, Amazon Web Services EMEA, delivered a session on “Leveraging Artificial Intelligence for Predictive Analytics and Decisioning.” Highlighting how real-time insights and AI technologies could help address immediate challenges with climate benefits, he untapped the AI potential post demonstration and how it could have a transformative influence on the way sustainability efforts are advanced. Participants witnessed the immense potential AI holds in advancing sustainability efforts and enabling proactive measures against climate risks.

Safaricom says, The Earth Arena session was a celebration of innovation, collaboration, and hope for a sustainable and resilient future. It reinforced the critical role that technology, finance, and data transparency can play in addressing climate change challenges in Africa.

By leveraging technological advancements, unlocking new financing models and empowering communities, and , Africa can collectively work towards a more sustainable future.
