[UPDATE] MPESA super app currently down

Safaricom’s MPESA app is currently down. Several users have reported being unable to use the app in the last few hours.

Safaricom has not issued any statement regarding the downtime but users are being greeted with an ‘’Error has occurred’’ notification when trying to do transactions.

The app which was launched in June 2021 recently surpassed three million users up from 1.2 million in April 2023. The telco launched the app for customers and its M-PESA for Business App.

With the new MPESA Super App, Safaricom basically brought front-end insights on customer spending, direct access to statements, and much more into one single app. The app also comes with a number of interesting features including “Offline Mode” and “Mini Apps”

According to Safaricom’s latest financial year to April 2023, the Super App processed 489 million transactions with a value of KSh. 1.3 trillion.

The current downtime has affected all the MPESA services on the app. Other service providers who also rely on MPESA have also been affected.

The SIM Toolkit seems to be working though for ordinary users who need to make urgent transactions.
