At times, we assume the small but very critical warnings shown by browsers. Warnings about visiting sites with no secure protocols, to downloading files from untrusted websites.
After dealing with the former, Google Chrome, in its part, wants to step in, again, and help us on the latter. In Chrome version 82 – slated to be released in April – will mainly deal with this issue. Starting with this iteration, Chrome will begin warning users of downloads that could put their security and privacy at risk.
The company will start small at first but promises on more stringent rules on insecure downloads, and will finally axe them out completely. According to Google, the slow transition process will buy web developers some time to update their websites.
In the beginning, the company will start with file types that are riskier to users – executable files. However, newer iterations from Chrome 82 will begin blocking more file types, as well.
Based on the provided timeline, Chrome will completely block all insecure file downloads from Chrome 86. Google will release Chrome 86 in October this year.
Since mobile platforms have native support for protection against insecure downloads, Google Chrome will delay releasing the same features on Android and iOS until version 83.
