Jumia Kenya has entered into a new partnership with Postal Corporation of Kenya to expand its pickup up stations across the country ahead of Jumia Black Friday 2019. What this means is that Jumia customers will now be able to pick their deliveries from different postal outlets across the country.
The Postal Corporation of Kenya currently operates a vast national network of postal outlets totalling to 625 with a distribution of at least two post offices in each of the 47 Counties. The population served per post office according to the Post Master General is over 70,000.
In May 2015 Jumia entered into a partnership with Posta to become the official delivery agent for goods purchased online on behalf of Jumia Kenya. This collaboration saw a surge in business with a sizeable percentage of goods being received, processed and delivered at various Posta Kenya selected outlets.
According to Jumia MD Sam Chappatte, the renewal of this partnership will give Jumia access to more customers and also offer customers more affordable delivery.
‘’We are taking the investment the Kenyan Government has made in infrastructure. We’re leveraging the fact that Posta has a very large network of pickup stations and we are plugging into that with our volume so that we can reach more customers’’ he said.
Dan Kagwe, the Post Master General said ‘’We are happy to once again partner with Jumia, as I formally announce the re-launch of the Posta Kenya and Jumia partnership. This partnership will enable customers to save more on the cost of delivery especially as we prepare for the Jumia Black Friday’’
‘’When shopping on Jumia, customers will have the option to pick-up products from a Post Office closest to them. This means that during the checkout process, the products will be dispatched to the selected office for collection,‘’ he added.
As of today, the service is live in 20 Posta outlets with plans to expand to other outlets in the coming months.
Commenting on the partnership, Posta Kenya General Manager, Courier services Elizabeth Mwaura said she sees it as Posta’s next step to profitability.
This new announcement is expected to bring Posta, which has recently been employing a number of strategies to create more revenue as well as reinvent itself back to its feet. In 2017, the firm announced that it was laying off 1,280 workers to reduce operational costs. The retrenchment was part of recommendations contained in a report compiled by a task force that sought to find ways of turning around the fortunes of Kenya’s oldest communications service provider.
Posta has also previously announced plans to partner with American e-commerce company Amazon to become their official logistics partner in the country.
