Safaricom to Offer Free Calls and Data to Customers as it Celebrates 20th Birthday

A free call of up to 20 minutes for all and 20GB for select customers

Safaricom turned 20 on Friday 23rd after officially launching in the Kenyan market on 23rd October 2000. The telco celebrated its 20th birthday today announcing its commitment to continue serving its customers and to support SMEs and Micro-SMEs.

As part of the celebration, the telco is also giving back to its customers, allowing them to enjoy one free call of up to 20 minutes within the next 30 days. Safaricom will notify each customer a day before to alert them of their free call.

And for those who have been with the telco for 20 years or are turning 20 this year, Safaricom will give them free 20GB data bundle. But there’s a catch; the 20GB is only valid for 7 days.

Besides the free data and minutes, the telco will be offering a new promotional bundle dubbed 20@20 for the next 30 days. Customers who purchase the package will receive 20 minutes plus 20MBs at Ksh 20.

And for the next 90 days, customers purchasing personalized Tunukiwa voice offers will receive free 20 minutes to call across all networks, the telco said.

To see these offers, dial *444# then select the Buy Minutes option.

Safaricom launched a new campaign ‘Twende Tukiuke’ which urges everyone to push and go beyond what is possible.

At the event, the telco also announced the commitment to cover the whole of the country with 4G internet by December 2020.

The company also plans to provide internet to 1 million homes and businesses over the next 5 years by leveraging its fibre and 4G network.

“In the past two decades, Safaricom has grown from a telecommunication service provider to a technology company, and our customers have been a key part of this journey,” said Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom.

“We are cognizant that technology and a data-driven economy can further support Kenya’s economic growth, and these will be our launchpad for the next 20 years.”
