Google working on an AI tool to take on ChatGPT

- Google's investments in AI have been massive. As far back as 2017, Google had started to brand itself as an AI-first company.
Google is certainly not sitting unbothered by all the buzz about AI chatbot ChatGPT, created by San Franciscan-based startup OPenAI.
What we know so far is that Google is working on its own version of an AI chatbot, and it’s only a matter of time before it hits the internet. CEO Sundar Pichai in his Q4 earnings conference call last week left all indications that the company is at an advanced stage of this development.
Google has its in-house AI model known as LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications). This is what the company plans to inject into search queries, in an effort to deliver factual and conversational results. It’s actually not surprising that experts have said, the effects of AI tools will be social, not technical. But we think it will be both social and technical as engineers work to outdo each other with the “best” tools.
The use of AI in just about everything is the next big thing. We’ve already seen it across industries such as healthcare, education, meteorology, and automobile manufacturing among others.
The arrival of the ChatGPT before Google’s own version of an AI chatbot could be to the latter’s advantage.
By now, Google has had a chance to interact with ChatGPT and weigh it against the capabilities of its own tools. Google is quite confident that its tool will deliver beyond expectations.
“Very soon, people will be able to interact directly with our newest, most powerful language model as a companion to Search, in experimental and innovative ways,” he said, referring to Google’s conversation technology LaMDA.
The company’s investments in AI have been massive. As far back as 2017, Google had started to brand itself as an AI-first company.
With this in mind, users have very high expectations as the company works to introduce its language model, “ in the coming weeks and months,” in the words of CEO Sundar Pichai.
In any case, the battle lines have been clearly drawn now. With the latest investment of $10 billion into ChatGPT by Microsoft, a battle of wits and financial muscle is looming amongst giant tech companies.
