Facebook owned messaging service WhatsApp has finally come to your desktop. The company has today launched the desktop application that will mirror conversations and messages from users smartphones.
Available for Windows 8+ and Mac OS 10.9+, WhatsApp says because the app runs natively on your desktop, you will have support for native desktop notifications, better keyboard shortcuts and more.
‘’Like WhatsApp Web, our desktop app is simply an extension of your phone: the app mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device.’’ the company said in a blog post.
This launch comes just 16 months after the service was made available for the web. Early this year, WhatsApp also removed its $1-a-year subscription fee, making the service available for free to users. This was seen as an attempt to look for new ways to connect with users.
To use the app, simply download it from your desktop browser. You will however need to open the app and scan the QR code using the WhatsApp app on your phone. Once you do, all your chats will load and you are good to go.
WhatsApp currently has more than 1 billion users today and this new app should a way for them to keep connecting all day.
