Bolt Now Represents 24% of Kenya’s Electric Vehicle Fleet

Following the launch of Kenya’s E-Mobility Policy, new data from Bolt highlights the growing role of shared mobility platforms in accelerating electric vehicle Electric Vehicle  adoption across the country.

With 5,808 electric vehicles currently operating on its platform, Bolt today represents approximately 24% of all electric vehicles in Kenya, based on an estimated national total of around 24,000 registered EVs. The figures underline how high-utilisation mobility services are helping to scale e-mobility beyond early adoption and pilot phases.

Kenya’s EV market has expanded rapidly in recent years, with electric motorcycles recording particularly strong growth, from 678 registered units in 2022 to contributing to an estimated 24,000 EVs nationwide by 2025. Ride-hailing and delivery platforms, where vehicles are in constant daily use, are emerging as a key channel through which electric mobility is reaching scale.

“The launch of the E-Mobility Policy provides important regulatory clarity for a transition that is already taking place on the ground,” said Dimmy Kanyankole, Senior General Manager, Bolt East Africa. “Ride-hailing is accelerating EV adoption by improving access to electric vehicles, including, through partnerships with financial institutions that enable drivers to acquire Electric Vehicles more affordably. By combining income-generating use with lower operating costs, ride-hailing is helping electric vehicles reach scale much faster than private ownership alone.

Unlike privately owned vehicles, Electric Vehicles operating on ride-hailing platforms benefit from higher utilisation rates, allowing drivers to realise earnings sooner while increasing public exposure to electric transport. This model supports both economic participation and the practical rollout of new technologies in urban mobility.
