Kenya School of TVET and Huawei Graduate 65 Lecturers in National ICT Capacity Drive

The Kenya School of TVET (KSTVET) and Huawei Technologies Kenya have announced the completion of the second phase of their national “Train the Trainer” program, a strategic initiative designed to upgrade the technical capacity of lecturers across the country’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

In a ceremony held on Monday, December 1, 2025, 65 TVET lecturers were awarded certifications after completing an intensive 15-day curriculum. The training focused on high-demand technical fields including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Communication, Cloud Computing, and Cybersecurity.

The program is part of a broader government effort to align vocational training with the Dual TVET model, which emphasizes strong linkages between academia and industry to ensure graduates possess market-ready skills.

Officiating the ceremony on behalf of the Principal Secretary for the State Department for TVET, Dr. Joseph Kanyi, Director of TVET, emphasized that the initiative is critical for Kenya’s national competitiveness.

“This program is not just about equipping trainers with ICT skills. It is about preparing Kenya’s workforce for a rapidly changing digital future,” said Dr. Kanyi. “The knowledge gained here will directly impact students, institutions, and national competitiveness.”

The 65 graduates are now tasked with operationalizing Huawei ICT Academies in their respective institutions. Specifically: 7 trainers will be deployed to the Academy Support Centre at KSTVET while 55 trainers will launch and manage Huawei ICT Academies at their home institutions.

The collaboration between the State Department for TVET and Huawei, which began in 2021, has already led to the establishment of 11 Huawei ICT Academies across Kenya.

A significant milestone was reached in May 2024, when KSTVET was officially recognized in China as the designated Academy Support Centre for Kenya, giving it the mandate to empower other TVET ICT academies nationwide.

This partnership was further solidified in May 2025 through a strengthened Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The expanded agreement targets the rollout of the program to 150 TVET institutions, with the ambitious goal of reaching 10,000 beneficiaries over the next three years.

The latest cohort’s curriculum was notably advanced, introducing lecturers to AI fundamentals, machine learning workflows, and deep learning concepts. Huawei awarded all participants with certification exam vouchers, enabling them to acquire globally recognized professional credentials.

Yuta Leng, Public Affairs Director at Huawei Technologies Kenya, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Kenya’s digital ecosystem.

“Huawei is honoured to support the State Department for TVET in empowering lecturers with globally competitive skills. Kenya is a rising technology hub in Africa, and we remain committed to expanding opportunities for both trainers and students,” said Leng.

The State Department has directed the newly certified trainers to cascade these skills to their students and ensure proper data management of the academies they establish.
