When Samsung sent over the Galaxy A56 unit for review a couple of weeks back, I had to switch from my primary device, the vivo V40 5G, immediately. Why, the phone had been one of my top considerations since Samsung announced its availability in Kenya.
The Galaxy A56 had the big, smooth 120Hz screen, a camera that’s great for my social media, and a battery that actually lasts.
But if you asked me now what my favourite feature is, it’s not any of those. It’s the one I didn’t even know I needed (Well, maybe I needed it lol): Samsung Knox.
For me, phone security was always just about having a decent fingerprint scanner. That was, until I actually thought about what’s on my phone. It’s not just photos and messages. It’s my banking app, my work email, my scanned ID, and all my saved passwords. The idea of losing my phone wasn’t just an inconvenience; it was terrifying.
That’s when I properly looked into Knox and discovered the ”Secure Folder”.
It’s the best way I can describe it: it’s a digital safe inside my phone. Setting it up was simple, and now it’s where my life-admin lives. I moved my banking apps, my password manager, and my work-related apps into it.
The real-world magic happened the other day. I was showing a friend some car photos, and I handed her my phone to let him scroll through the gallery. In the past, I would have been nervously hovering, worried she’d accidentally swipe out and see a sensitive notification from my bank or my business partner..
But now, I didn’t feel that at all.
My public phone just has my social media, my music, and my photo gallery. My private life is completely hidden inside the Secure Folder, which is locked with its own separate PIN and fingerprint scan. He could have browsed my phone for an hour and would never have even known my banking apps were on it.
I also read up on why it’s so secure. It’s not just a hidden folder. The A56 has Knox Vault, which is apparently a hardware-level feature that flagship phones have. It’s a separate, tamper-proof chip that physically isolates my PIN, passwords, and fingerprints from the main operating system.
Knowing that my phone’s core security isn’t just software, but actual, physical hardware, gives me a level of confidence I just didn’t have before. I’m not a big tech expert, but I know what peace of mind feels like. The camera is fun, but Knox is the feature that lets me have a relaxed mind.
