Huawei, Partners Empower 500 Women and Youth in Murang’a with Digital Skills

A five-day Digital Skills Training Program has equipped 500 women and youth across several sub-counties in Murang’a County with essential digital competencies, in a bid to promote inclusion and economic empowerment.

Now in its third edition in Murang’a, the initiative was delivered through a partnership between Huawei Kenya, Computers for Schools Kenya (CFSK), the Joyful Women Organization, and MaMa Doing Good. The training focused on practical, market-relevant digital skills aimed at unlocking new opportunities in business, employment, and innovation.

“We are thrilled to partner with MaMa Doing Good to empower women with the digital skills they need to thrive in today’s connected world,” said Maureen Mwaniki, Director of Public Affairs at Huawei Kenya. “Our goal is to ensure digital empowerment reaches women across the country—driving inclusion and bridging the digital divide.”

At the program’s closing ceremony, organizers emphasized that digital literacy is no longer a luxury but a powerful enabler of economic independence and resilience.

“Digital skills are the new currency of opportunity,” said Joycelyn Mwikali, Director of Corporate Services at MaMa Doing Good. “This training is opening doors for 500 women and youth in Murang’a. By equipping them with the right knowledge, we’re empowering participants to harness technology for entrepreneurship, innovation, and sustainable livelihoods.”

The program goes beyond basic digital literacy, organizers noted, aiming to expand access to opportunities and build stronger, connected communities.

The initiative comes against the backdrop of the World Bank’s 2023 Digital Inclusion Report, which shows only 38% of rural youth in Kenya possess basic ICT skills, compared to 67% in urban areas—a gap that limits equitable access to opportunities. The World Bank’s Future of Work report further projects that over 60% of jobs in Kenya by 2030 will require advanced digital and cognitive skills, highlighting the urgency of investing in digital capacity.

By equipping women and youth with future-ready skills, Huawei and its partners say the program is not only bridging Kenya’s digital divide but also positioning underserved communities as leaders in the country’s rapidly evolving digital economy.
