Tech launches in 2025 often feel like a barrage of buzzwords and overblown promises. Google’s latest Made By Google showcase managed something different.
The show had polish, a touch of celebrity energy, even Jimmy Fallon on hosting duties, but underneath the spectacle was a more thoughtful message: phones should fit into our lives with less friction, not demand more of our attention.
The Era of Agentic AI
Rick Osterloh, Google’s hardware chief, introduced the idea of agentic AI—not as another empty label, but as a real shift in how phones behave. We’re used to assistants waiting for commands. Gemini, running on the new Tensor G5 chip, flips that expectation. During a demo, it didn’t just suggest dinner spots for a team outing. It booked the table, found a karaoke bar nearby, and even coordinated custom T-shirts. That’s more than convenience; it’s a glimpse at a phone acting as a partner rather than just a tool.
Pixel 10 Pro Fold: Durable Innovation
On the hardware side, the standout was the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Foldables have always been fragile showpieces, admired more than trusted. Google is trying to change that. This is the first foldable with IP68 water and dust resistance, a spec that says more than “we can build it”—it says users no longer need to handle cutting-edge tech with kid gloves. It’s a rare foldable that feels ready for real life.
Breaking the Bubbles
Then came a moment that had little to do with specs but everything to do with people. Google leaned into the green bubble vs. blue bubble debate, praising Apple’s decision to adopt RCS messaging. Adrienne Lofton summed it up simply: “technology is at its best when it brings people together, no matter what phone brand they carry.” It was less a dig at Apple than a statement of intent. Google is positioning itself as the company that wants communication to feel seamless, not divided.
More Than Specs
Taken together, the Pixel 10 lineup isn’t about dazzling gimmicks. It’s about trimming away the small frustrations of digital life. There’s power in the new chip, yes, and there are the expected leaps in cameras and displays. But the real story is philosophical: a phone that tries to work for you, not make you work for it.
Google didn’t shout this message. Instead, it built it into the details—the AI that takes initiative, the foldable that feels dependable, the messaging standard that breaks down unnecessary walls. That restraint may be the boldest move of all.
