Uber has unveiled a new suite of safety features for its motorcycle ride-hailing service, Uber Boda, reinforcing its commitment to rider and driver safety in Kenya.
The enhancements include real-time GPS tracking, emergency in-app support, verified driver onboarding, and professional training programs.
The initiative brings Uber’s globally recognized safety standards to the boda boda sector, offering a more secure and reliable option for two-wheel transport.
According to Cassie Jaganyi, Uber’s Head of Communications for Sub-Saharan Africa, the company is using technology and training to set a new benchmark for motorcycle safety in Kenya.
“Safety has always been at the core of everything we do at Uber, regardless of whether someone is riding in a car or on a motorcycle,” said Cassie. “We have introduced technology and training standards that set a new benchmark for motorcycle taxi safety in Kenya, ensuring both our drivers and riders can travel with confidence.”
Boda bodas are central to Kenya’s transport ecosystem, with over 2.5 million registered motorcycles contributing nearly 4.4% to the country’s GDP. Uber Boda’s new safety measures aim to professionalize the sector while enhancing commuter confidence.
In partnership with Greenwheels Africa, Uber is also introducing electric motorcycles into the fleet, adding a sustainability component to the service.
“At Greenwheels, our focus is on providing clean, efficient, and safe two-wheeled transport solutions. Our partnership with Uber allows us to combine our expertise in electric mobility with their technology and safety standards to offer an experience that is not only safer, but also more sustainable,” said Nabil Anjarwalla, CEO, Greenwheels Africa. “We ensure that every rider receives hands-on training, regular safety inspections, and support so that they can operate confidently and responsibly on the roads.”
Uber Kenya says it will continue to monitor safety performance and collaborate with authorities to improve transport standards across the country.
