MCK Invites Public Participation On AI Media Guidelines
The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) is inviting Kenyans to issue feedback on the proposed guidelines concerning the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the media.
In a statement, MCK noted that through a technical committee, it has developed media guidelines on the use of AI, data and social media to ensure appropriate and ethical integration for their use in professional journalism in Kenya.
MCK CEO David Omwoyo said that four documents have been developed to this end.
They include a Data Governance Guide for Media Practice in Kenya, a Media Handbook for Reporting on AI in Kenya, a Media Guide on the Use of AI in Kenya, and a Guide on the Use of Social Media and the Internet for Media Practice in Kenya.
Omwoyo added that the invite is in accordance with the requirements of the Constitution of Kenya, which mandates public participation in policy-making.
“The Council invites the public, stakeholders and all interested parties to submit their views, comments and recommendations on the draft guide,” he said.
“This will inform its review and to ensure that the guidelines reflect a wide range of views and are in line with the needs of the industry.”
As AI, data, and social media tools continue to transform journalism, Omwoyo said it is crucial to adopt standards that maintain journalistic integrity and uphold public trust.
“The guidelines aim to support the media in navigating these technological changes while safeguarding professionalism and ethics,” he continued.
“They represent a proactive approach to addressing the evolving challenges and opportunities presented by technological advancements in journalism.”
The guidelines are available on the Media Council of Kenya website link HERE.
Written submissions should be sent to the Council via email at Guidelines@mediacouncil.or.ke not later than January 26, 2025.
Omwoyo affirmed the Council’s commitment to empowering journalists and media practitioners to uphold the highest standards of professionalism while embracing technological innovation.
