Safaricom receives payment facilitator certificate from Visa
Digital payments company Visa has awarded Safaricom a Payment Facilitator Certificate, marking a major milestone in its ongoing partnership with the telco.
The expanded collaboration aims to diversify payment acceptance models by introducing card payments supporting all card networks through Visa’s CyberSource payment gateway, thereby strengthening Safaricom’s merchant ecosystem.
The move is part of an ongoing multi-year partnership that began with the successful launch of the M-PESA GlobalPay Visa Virtual Card in June 2022.
By leveraging Visa’s advanced payment technology, Safaricom merchants can access and offer a wider range of payment options, enabling them to serve their customers more efficiently and securely.
Key highlights of the partnership include the introduction of card payments, providing greater flexibility and convenience to merchants, enabling micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to accept card payments, and providing security and ensuring reliable payment processing through world-class decision manager capabilities using Visa’s CyberSource gateway.
Another highlight of the partnership builds on the success of the Visa Virtual Card launched in June 2022. Visa said the partnership will continue to grow and bring innovative payment solutions to the market.
“We are delighted to award Safaricom the Payment Facilitator Certificate and take our partnership to the next level,” said Chad Pollock, General Manager and Vice President, Visa East Africa.
“This collaboration underscores our commitment to providing cutting-edge payment solutions that drive merchant growth and efficiency. While we opened the world to M-PESA consumers in 2022 with the GlobalPay Visa Virtual Card, we are now providing over 600,000 merchants with access to the consumer world.”
“Our partnership with Visa has been instrumental in improving our payment options. The launch of card payments through Visa’s Cybersource gateway is a testament to our shared vision of providing merchants with diverse and secure payment options,” added Esther Waititu, Chief Financial Services Officer, Safaricom.
“At Safaricom, we are continuously developing holistic solutions for our customers and this milestone will enhance our value proposition for merchants for both online and in-person payments”
