Apple has finally bowed to pressure and is likely to build the next generation of iPhones with USB-C ports. The iPhone 14 series released a few months ago will be the last with a lightning port.
This is a huge relief to millions of iPhone users around the world, who have for years wanted a more universally acceptable port from Apple.
Not much information has been released about this development so far, but Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing Joanna Stern gave an indictive hint. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Stern responded to the question of whether Apple is moving to USB-C, stating, “ obviously we’ll have to comply, we have no choice.”
Stern’s response makes reference to a new set of regulations in the European Union, as well as in Brazil, which mandates the use of USB-C on smartphones.
Apple has long resisted the idea, but now that the EU will actually start enforcing the law starting in 2024, the company will have to make the change if it wants to keep selling iPhones in the EU.
”We think the approach would’ve been better environmentally, and better for our customers, for the governments to not be that prescriptive,” Stern said.
USB-C ports on iPhones will give consumers great relief, as it allows interoperability between gadgets as far as data transfer and charging are concerned.
