Showmax adds BBC World News in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II

Showmax subscribers across sub-Saharan Africa will have access to live broadcasting from BBC World News until 23 September 2022.

The broadcast will include a live stream of the funeral of Britain’s longest-serving monarch at Westminster Abbey on Wednesday, 19 September at 11:00 BST.

The live news channel will be available to all subscribers regardless of their plan. While Showmax doesn’t usually offer live news channels, the Showmax Pro plan includes live news from Euronews, Africanews and Newzroom Afrika; KTN News, KBC, NTV and K24 for Kenya only; GTV, TV3, Adom TV, UTV and GHOne for Ghana only; and SABC News for South Africa only as a standard fixture.

In 2020, during the pandemic, the streaming platform also temporarily added World News, CNN International, Sky News, Euronews, and Al Jazeera.  The move it said was to allow its users to stay updated on the latest developments regarding the pandemic. It however ended the streams on June 30th saying “As lockdown is now easing and slowly we’re getting back to some kind of new normal, we’re going to be discontinuing the news service.” it said.

From time to time, Showmax makes additional live channels available to subscribers, including Big Brother Naija. In 2021, Showmax streamed the pop-up tribute channel dedicated to Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.
