Integrated telecommunication solutions provider Orange has today launched an entry level dual SIM handset, further lowering the entry barriers for first time mobile phone users.

With dual SIM capability, the device dubbed Kaduda, comes with a 1.3MP camera, Bluetooth, micro SD slot and is also data-enabled. Kaduda is retailing at KSh 999, making it the most affordable dual SIM handset in the market.

Company CEO Vincent Lobry says Kaduda further strengthens the telco’s commitment to providing value and quality to its existing and potential subscribers but more so towards making handsets more accessible and affordable to all.

“With the expansion of our network across the country, during the first quarter of this year, this phone ensures that more Kenyans will get to access communication services at an affordable price and get to enjoy the quality of service that we offer.”

The CEO also adds that new customers onto the Orange network will get to experience the competitive tariff options, key among these being the company’s flagship Tujuane and the popular Holla as well as make use of its comprehensive SMS bundle options.

Operators launching affordable entry-level handsets are bound to attract even more entry level subscribers. The latest Communication Authority sector statistics indicated that mobile penetration had reached 80.5% during the period under review. Pre-paid mobile subscriptions also grew by 1.5% to stand at 32 million subscribers.

“The regulator has continually recognised our network as the fastest growing in the market and with the introduction of this device into the market, we are making it possible for more Kenyans to communicate and become part of a connected Kenya,” adds Mr Lobry.

Kaduda will have one of the SIMs locked to Orange, with the second open to other networks. The phone also comes with long battery life, with the option of activating a Super Battery Mode.

Late February saw the telco announce a partnership with GreenLight Planet (GLP), a US based company that delivers affordable energy to off-grid consumers. The partnership will see to the provision of clean, safe and affordable solar lighting to Kenyan homes, in areas with limited access to electricity, via GLP’s Sun King Lamps brand.

“Our launch of Kaduda into the Kenyan market coupled with the launch of the Sun King Lamps, will ensure that our target market for the dual SIM phone is able to power their phones through a charging mechanism on the lamp,” adds Lobry.

Orange is also offering the Kaduda as part of a bundled offer with the Sun King Lamp’s three versions: KSh 3,899 with the Sun King Mobile, KSh 4,699 with the Sun King Pro II and KSh 8,799 with the Sun King Home. Kaduda is available in all Orange and partner shops countrywide and comes in red, black and white.
