For the second consecutive year, Chinese tech company Oppo has been ranked among the top 10 Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) filers. The rankings were announced during the 21st World Intellectual Property (IP) Day, celebrated annually on April 21, by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
PCT, for the uninformed, is a way that companies seek patent protection for innovations across multiple geo-restrictions by filing only one “international” patent instead of separately for each jurisdiction.
As of March 31, Oppo had filed for over 61,000 patents, including 54,000 utility patents — 89% of the company’s patent applications.
So far, the company owns more than 26,000 approved patents globally.
“The World IP Day serves as a good opportunity to raise people’s awareness of protecting IP assets,” Adler Feng, Senior Director of Intellectual Property at OPPO, said in a statement.
“As a rapidly growing tech company with a rich and diverse IP portfolio, OPPO is committed to investing more in technological research and development in the foreseeable future.”
Oppo hails its “virtuous innovation” strategy for helping the company rise to become one of the best-selling smartphone companies across the world. The company has several proprietary technologies in various industries, from 5G, to flash charge, AI, and image.
For 5G alone, the company filed over 3,700 families of global patent applications and declared over 1,500 families of 5G standard patents to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).
It has also submitted more than 3,000 5G standard-related proposals to the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). And, according to IPlytics, a revered German research institute, Oppo is among the top 10 companies in the number of declared 5G patent families in 2021.
This is an important achievement for the company, as the world continues to adopt the next-gen of cellular networks gradually. But even as 5G adoption is ongoing, tech companies continue to develop new standards to help finetune the next-gen cellular technology.
Flash charge has been key for enabling super-fast charging speeds on Oppo devices, including the recently launched Oppo Reno 5F. Oppo has 1,500 granted patents for its proprietary Flash charge technology and is expanding the technology to more devices, including cars, through partnerships.
