Snapchat has more active users on Android than iOS

Snapchat's investment to rebuild its Android app paid off

Snapchat has more of its users on Android compared to iOS. The company announced the important milestone today during the release of its Q1, 2021 earnings report. Snapchat has over 280 million daily active users, a 22 percent increase from Q1, 2020. The majority of its DAUs were on Android, the company revealed in its earnings report.

This is a first for the company, which first launched on iOS in 2011. A year later, Snapchat expanded support to Android, but its app was anything but smooth, leading to a big revamp in 2019.

Although the company notes that DAUs, increased across Android and iOS, the serious work done on its Android app has helped the company attract more users. Calling it a “critical milestone,” Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel it’s a reflection of “the long-term value of the investment we made to rebuild our Android application.”

Launching on iOS first is not new. A recent example is the audio-only platform Clubhouse, launched in April 2020, but is not available on Android to date.

Snapchat’s growth has been linked to investment in content abroad, enhanced language support, and localization of features.

It expanded a couple of features during the period under review; Spotlight expansion to more countries, 321 new channels, and Lens Studio 3.4 with enhanced hand-tracking capabilities, 3D multi-body tracking, full-body segmentation, and a set of assets for creators.

The company partnered with Samsung to add Snapchat lens inside the native camera app on select Galaxy smartphones.
