Ever since HMD Global, the official licensee of Nokia branded phones, joined Google’s Android One program in 2018, it has provided more extended support for its devices.
The company has been applauded as one of the manufacturers that provide hasty updates to its devices, an uncommon phenomenon in the fragmented Android land.
While 98% of Android smartphone brands offer inconsistent software and security updates (or none at all), a 2020 report showed 20 Nokia phones sold by the company from the third quarter of 2019 to Q2, 2020 had all been upgraded to Android 10.
Some of these had been launched with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box.
This is all according to Counterpoint Research’s 2020 report titled Nokia Phones Lead the Trust Rankings Based on Software, Security Updates and Build Quality. The report surveyed top Android smartphone makers, including HMD Global’s Nokia, OnePlus, Samsung, realme, Oppo, vivo, Xiaomi, Huawei, Lenovo, and LG.
Nokia phones also topped on security patch frequency, with a perfect 100 percent score among the top 10 Android manufacturers.
The firm noted the company’s leadership not just in the general market but across different price tiers. From the low-end budget segment to the upper end.
“Regular software and security updates helps not just the overall device experience, but also helps devices retain their value over time,” said the research firm’s Global Content Manager, Ritesh Bendre.
The report also considered other factors besides software and security updates, build quality, and the number of enterprise-recommended devices.
