Steps on How To Use Dishwasher More Effectively
A dishwasher is the ultimate energy and labour-saving appliance. Cleaning dishes in the dishwasher uses less energy and water than washing them by hand. If you are busy or have a large household, a dishwasher will save you the effort and time to wash your dishes manually. For an office setting or a large family, an electric dishwasher is a must-have. The following reasons may change your mind about your current dishwashing habits and why you should be using a dishwasher in your home.
- Go for the full load
Before running the dishwasher, ensure that you have a full load to help make the most of the energy, water, and detergent that the machine uses. Loading the dishwasher efficiently goes a long way. Pre-rinse is not a mandatory option, rather, pre-rinse your soiled dishes at the sink or choose your dishwasher’s Rinse Only cycle if the utensils are going to sit in the machine all day. This will keep food from drying on your dishware and keep all foul odours under control. But if you have to run a cycle right away, just scrape off the food and leave it at that. A full load versus a few dishes make a lot of difference in your dishwasher’s use of energy and water.
- Picking the right size
Always choose the size model that fits your needs – depending upon your family size. A compact model is more efficient than a huge one unless you have to run it several times a day.
- Skip the sink
Saving water is important, but also ensure that you save money. Scrape all dishes thoroughly with a dry sponge or rough brush to get rid of leftover food particles that can clog drains
- Lower the heat
Internal booster heaters in modern dishwashers can increase the wash cycle water temperature up to 140 degrees. Some dishwasher models do this regardless of the temperature of the incoming water, so you end up heating the water twice. If your house has solar water heating, you should lower the temperature of your water heater thermostat down to 120 degrees.
- Energy-saving mode
Check the settings on your dishwasher to use the energy-saving mode to conserve almost half of the water and water heating energy that is normally used by other cycles.
- Air it out
Choose an air-dry cycle that uses unheated air to dry your dishes. With this feature, you can save about 15-50% of your dishwasher’s operational cost. If your model does not offer an air-dry cycle, you should stop your dishwasher just before the dry cycle and open your machine to allow your dishes to air dry.
Other tips:
- Never stack items. The water jets will not be able to reach and clean the dish that is on top. If the water cannot reach it, it is not likely to get clean.
- Plates and bowls should go on the bottom rack of the dishwasher.
- Lay them facing up so that the dirty side faces where the water spray is strongest, usually the centre of the rack.
- Casseroles, pots and pans should angle down for the best cleaning results.
