Global Shipping Industry Hit with Cyber Attacks
The global shipping industry has been hit with two cyberattacks within a week, causing disruptions to the movement of goods.
Supply chains are currently straining to ensure a consistent flow of goods as the world prepares to enter the busiest shopping months.
The International Maritime Organization’s website www.imo.org has been down since September 30. The regulator body says the cyber-attacks hit a number of its web-based and internal intranet services.
Explaining the cause of disruption, IMO says a sophisticated cyber-attack caused the interruption of service against the Organization’s IT systems. The attackers were able to overcome the organizations’ “robust security measures in place.”
The good news is that critical systems were shut down in the wake of the attacks to prevent further damage. And Internal and external emails are still working normally.
IMO is working with its parent organization, the United Nations, and security experts to restore the systems and identify the source of the attack.
The only reinstated services, according to the blog post, is the GISIS database, IMODOCS, and virtual publications.
The team plans to strengthen its security further to prevent the recurrence of the attacks.
Earlier this week, on September 28, the CMA CGM SA reported that its systems had been compromised. On September 29, updates from the company confirmed that it had restored all communications. And maritime and port operations are working as usual.
CMA CGM SA is the world’s fourth-biggest container liner by capacity.
