Twitter has announced a wide fetching crackdown on the platform, aims at limiting the reach of accounts linked to QAnon, a conspiracy theory group. The company has already taken down more than 7,000 QAnon accounts in the past few weeks.
Besides that, they have also put in place sweeping measures meant to limit the reach of over 150,000 related accounts.
Some of those limitations include hiding accounts associated with QAnon from appearing in Trends and recommendations, blocking URLs associated with QAnon content from being shared on Twitter, and limiting their activity in search and conversations.
Twitter has said their hard stance on the conspiracy theory movement has come after increased harassment on individual users on the platform in the past few weeks. Last year, the company reportedly banned only one QAnon related account.
Admittedly, Twitter is not the only social media platform to ban QAnon-related accounts. Facebook banned QAnon related groups in May, but have struggled to keep up ever since.
In the future, Twitter says, “we will permanently suspend accounts Tweeting about these topics that we know are engaged in violations of our multi-account policy, coordinating abuse around individual victims, or are attempting to evade a previous suspension.”
It seems social media platforms are not the only victims of QAnon conspiracy theorists; In June, Roku yanked out a dedicated QAnon channel that had been launched on the platform a month earlier.
