Kenya ’s Mobile Penetration: The number of people owning a mobile phone in Kenya leads in the region with approx 62pc of the population, according to Airtel Africa. In its report, Airtel defines unique mobile penetration as the number of mobile phone owners as a percentage of the total population.
One key thing to note about the research is that it assumes multiple SIM cards ownership which should be a key metric to include.
Kenya’s Communication watchdog, CAK, in December, warned that “Mobile (SIM) penetration in the country remains high partly due to multiple SIM ownership by consumers.”

Multiple SIM ownership is attributed to price-conscious citizens who want to benefit from the various special plans offered by various operators.
Despite the apparent issue of multiple SIM ownership, the figures indicate massive mobile penetration in the country compared to the rest of the region.
Other African countries considered with the high mobile uptake percentages include Zambia (54 percent), Tanzania (49 percent), Nigeria (45 percent), Uganda (42 percent), and Democratic Republic of Congo (39 percent).
