Are smartphones interesting again?- A closer look at Samsung’s Galaxy S20 range and Galaxy Z- Flip
The wait is finally over, Samsung has revealed four new smartphones at their much anticipated Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2020 event in a bid to declare dominance in the smartphone arena. The four handsets consisted of three versions of the Samsung Galaxy S20 and their improved foldable phone, the Galaxy Z Flip.
Looking back at Samsung’s previous attempt at a flip phone, the Z Flip has a lot to prove while the S20 fails to stand out from the swarm of phones that are currently available on the market. However, it does have a few tricks up its sleeve.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip
It’s been some time since we’ve seen a flip phone on the market. The fact that Samsung is reigniting the flame begs to ask if there is a market for it? Although flip phones haven’t been around for a while, there is an attractiveness about them. The notion of physically being able to flip open the phone and begin using it already makes it more interesting than current smartphones.
Naturally, the clamshell design of the phone is something we are not strangers to, making the phone feel very natural to use. The new bouts of technology on the device means the Z FLip will need to be treated more carefully due to its delicate foldable screen, requiring a decent amount of tumb power, compared to its older siblings which could just be flipped open with the flick of the wrist. The Z FLip is stylish and can be seen as a novelty item.
The design of the Z Flip means it is a compact, neat phone that is easy to carry around in pockets and bags. The phone when unfolded sits impressively flat on its hinges, and when snapped close into two halves, both segments sit flat on one another without a noticeable gap. It is too early to say, of course, if the design is robust enough for everyday use, but it most definitely will get heads turning.
Still, there is enormous potential for it, especially in the market of vloggers who can sit the phone down on any surface and begin recording their video without needing a stand. This is because the phone reacts to being partially open at 90 degrees, allowing users to use it like a laptop. The foldable screen on the handset is impressive and is made of a flexible type of glass.
The design of the phone has allowed Samsung to place a tiny screen on the outer side of the handset. The screen displays standard lock screen settings such as time, date and battery life. However, the screen also allows users to see notifications when they come through, which means users won’t need to constantly keep opening and closing their handsets.
The downside of the phone is that the screen is quite long, which makes it tricky to use one-handedly. The price of the handset is quite steep too costing £1,299 and is less powerful compared to the S20 range. In comparison, it has a lower-quality screen, a less powerful processor and a weaker camera.

Samsung Galaxy S20 range
Samsung’s Galaxy S20 range comes in three models. The first is the S20 which has a 6.2inch screen. The second is the S20 Plus which has a 6.7icnch screen, and the third is the S20 Ultra which has a 6.9inch screen. The S20 range is the most powerful phone Samsung has ever built. Taking gamers into consideration, they have also improved the screen refresh ratio to 120Hz and the handsets still include the edge to edge screen.
The phones come with the latest Snapdragon 855+ chip and includes 8GB of RAM and 128GB of standard storage. The S20 Ultra also includes Samsungs largest ever battery on a Galaxy phone. All three phones are 5G ready and come with the option to connect them to providing networks. The most prominent feature of the range, but only available on the S20 Ultra is the quad-lens camera which includes up to 108MP, an increased amount of pixels and a 100x zoom feature, which can’t be found on any other handset.
The benefits of these new cameras mean users will be able to use extra editing features. The phone also has a new photo mode called ‘Single Take’. Users just need to press a button, and the phone takes a compilation of short videos along with a range of still images, applying different filters thanks to the use of AI. The algorithms in the phone then select the best pictures and organise them for the user to scroll through. Other features also include 8K filming abilities, long exposure videos in night mode and hyperlapse.
Although these features sound great, with them comes an obstructive camera bump at the back of the handset as the S20 Ultra comes with a large camera housing. Not only is the phone large in size but the price tag means those in favour of it will need deep pockets too.
