Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon 865 and 765 Mobile Platforms
At the on-going annual Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii, Qualcomm announced two mobile platform chipsets that will power most of 2020’s premium and mid-range phones. Snapdragon 865 is the name of the new chipset which takes over the Snapdragon 855+ announced this year while the new mid-range chipset is the Snapdragon 765.
Despite the usual performance improvements and power efficiency, both of these chipsets have one thing in common – 5G support.
The two have a difference though, the premium Snapdragon 865 chipset sports a separate 5G modem unlike the integrated modem on the Snapdragon 765.
That means the Snapdragon 865 will not be more power-efficient, unlike if the company had opted for an integrated 5G modem. A separate 5G modem also means the chipset will occupy more real estate inside smartphones.
With the SDM 865 having no modem on board, Qualcomm says OEMs will still have to support 5G if they opt for this high-end chip since it comes with the X55 5G modem as a package.
Another common thing between the two is the support for AI a characteristic that has become essential to smartphones these days.
“The flagship Snapdragon 865 Mobile Platform, which includes the Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System, is the world’s most advanced 5G platform, delivering unmatched connectivity and performance for the next generation of flagship devices,” Qualcomm said in a statement.
“The Snapdragon 765/765G brings integrated 5G connectivity, advanced AI processing, and select Snapdragon Elite Gaming experiences.”
As per now, little is known about the mobile features that will be made available by the two chipsets. But we will update when the company details on the same.
