Kenya continues to witness a revolution in mobile telephony, with many firms taking advantage of the evolving technology to develop innovative applications that enhance access to financial services in the country.
It is through this that Mobikash has launched its own platform dubbed ‘Lipa Sasa Na MobiKash’ which seeks to challenge the dominance of Safaricom’s M-pesa.
Through this new platform customers from GSM networks will now be able to conduct transactions. Lipa Sasa na MobiKash will also help deliver mobile money transactions in real time making cashless transactions at the grassroots level a reality for thousands of Kenyans. The launch comes in the wake of concerted efforts to refuse cash based transactions in line with global trends.
Today’s event also saw MobiKash formally announce a strategic partnership with local Kenyan investment conglomerate, Foundation Enterprise Program (FEP) Group, that will see the mobile money service provider broaden its footprints in the step with FEP Group’s county and national agenda. The partnership devices from FEP Group’s strategic investment in Mobikash Afrika through the acquisition of a controlling stake in 2013.
Speaking during the reception in Nairobi today, Mobikash Afrika CEO, Duncan Oduor Otieno said that the two developments signaled a revamped strategy that would see Mobikash strengthen its services and portfolio while offering tangible and innovative e-commerce solutions.
“With Lipa Sasa Na Mobikash, merchants across Kenya will instantly, gain access to a safe platform, drastically reducing risks of handling fake currency and theft. The system will also enhance efficiency, by making it easy for merchants to manage their records better. “
Mobikash expects to tap into the expansive customer base, estimated at approximately 25.1 million Kenyans currently subscribed to mobile services.
According to the Permanent Secretary ministry of ICT who was present during the launch, he congratulated the move by Mobikash and all those making use of the available ICT infrastructures in the country to come up with great innovations, “ This launch wouldn’t come at a better time as the government has now insisted on the various public service sectors to move into Digital Money Platform.”
According to a report by the Central Bank of Kenya a total of KSHs. 1.3 trillion transacted by Kenyans on their mobile phones in 2013 on average daily transactions stood at Kshs 5.2 billion.
