Indonesia restricts usage of some WhatsApp and Instagram features over riots
The Indonesian government has restricted the use of both Instagram and WhatsApp over deadly riots experienced in the country. The issue, which has been confirmed by the Indonesian minister citing that users will experience lagging while using some features on Instagram and WhatsApp.
Some users from Indonesia have confirmed that they are experiencing delays in sharing of multimedia messages, including videos, pictures, and voice notes. Facebook has confirmed that they are in talks with the Indonesian government over the same.
The coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs, in a press conference confirmed that the government is limiting usage of some features to restore calmness.
However, according to a TechCrunch report, users can be able to bypass the restrictions by using VPNs on either WIFI or cellular data. Political unrest in the country emerged after the election results that were announced on Tuesday.
To Facebook, this is not news since they have faced similar restrictions in other countries over their inability to curb spread fake news on the platform.
