Ethio Telecom's Green Energy Partnership with Ascot Energy Targets 5G and Rural Infrastructure

Ethio Telecom links green energy partnership to its Next Horizon 2028 expansion roadmap

Ethio Telecom has entered a strategic collaboration with the Italian firm Ascot Energy to integrate advanced green energy technologies into its national digital infrastructure.

Announced late last week, the Ethio Telecom green energy partnership aims to build a climate-resilient power backbone capable of supporting the high energy demands of 4G, 5G, and modern data centers.

The initiative focuses on ensuring uninterrupted network operations across Ethiopia’s diverse geography, including remote and underserved regions, while driving down operational costs through sustainable power solutions.

“Prioritizing energy efficiency is a key driver of operational excellence, cost optimization, and long-term sustainability,” said Frehiwot Tamru, CEO of Ethio Telecom.

Infrastructure for the Next Horizon 2028 Strategy

The collaboration aligns with the “Next Horizon: Digital & Beyond 2028” strategy, which seeks to harmonize rapid technological expansion with environmental standards. CEO Frehiwot Tamru emphasized that the telecommunications sector is inherently energy-intensive. By prioritizing green power, the state-owned provider intends to maintain affordable digital services while actively decarbonizing its operational footprint.

Technical Framework and Hybrid Solutions

A delegation led by Ascot Energy CTO Gaetano Fasciana presented a technical framework centered on hybrid energy systems. These systems are designed to:

  • Maximize fuel efficiency for backup generators
  • Extend the lifespan of deep-cycle batteries
  • Utilize IoT-enabled monitoring for remote site management
  • Enhance security at decentralized infrastructure locations

The integration of Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities allows for real-time data tracking and remote management, which reduces the need for physical site visits and optimizes capital utilization.

Financing and Implementation

The two organizations have agreed to establish a joint technical working team to align Ascot’s hardware with the specific requirements of the Ethiopian landscape. Beyond the technical rollout, the partners are exploring innovative and sustainable financing mechanisms to fund the transition. This project builds upon Ethio Telecom’s existing portfolio of solar-powered sites and broader green infrastructure programs.
