WaveX Becomes First Reseller Partner at LINX Internet Exchanges Kenya Sites

Kenyan internet service provider WaveX has been announced as the first official reseller partner at both LINX Nairobi and LINX Mombasa, the two internet exchange points (IXPs) operated by the London Internet Exchange (LINX) in Kenya.

The partnership means WaveX can now offer other networks across East Africa a route to either exchange without those networks needing a physical presence at the facilities, a development that could meaningfully lower the bar for smaller ISPs and regional networks looking to access local peering services.

Internet exchange points work by allowing networks to connect directly with each other and exchange traffic locally, rather than routing it the long way through international servers in Europe or elsewhere. This keeps data closer to the end user, reducing the time it takes to load a webpage or stream video, and cuts costs for network operators.

Until now, accessing LINX’s Kenyan exchanges typically required a network to have its own physical equipment at one of the participating data centres. As a reseller, WaveX effectively removes that requirement, acting as a gateway for networks that want the benefits of peering without the infrastructure overhead.

LINX first set foot in Africa in November 2023 with the launch of LINX Nairobi, a neutral interconnection platform spanning four key data centres in the capital. The exchange has since grown rapidly: peak traffic at LINX Nairobi nearly quadrupled in 2025 compared to the previous year, reaching 64.5Gbps, a growth rate of 289%.

LINX Mombasa followed in February 2025. The coastal city was a strategic choice given its position as home to several major submarine cables, including 2Africa, SEACOM, TEAMS, and EASSy, critical links connecting Africa to the Middle East, Europe, and Asia. LINX Mombasa has already surpassed 1TB of connected capacity in its first year of operation.

LINX also absorbed the customer base of internet exchange incubator Asteroid Kenya last year, following a co-operative agreement in September 2025 that saw LINX take over management of Asteroid’s Nairobi and Mombasa interconnection operations before Asteroid ceased operations in Kenya at the end of 2025.

WaveX Internet Service Provider LTD, operating under ASN 328977 and based in Nanyuki, Kenya, has positioned itself as a rapidly evolving regional ISP, peering with more than 118 networks and counting SEACOM and Hurricane Electric among its upstream providers. The company has a track record of investing in internet infrastructure beyond its core commercial services: in May 2025, WaveX partnered with Quad9 to become its official regional infrastructure sponsor, deploying DNS nodes at Nairobi and Mombasa IXPs to improve DNS resolution speed and provide real-time filtering of malicious domains.

Patrick Mbogo, Interconnection Specialist for Africa at LINX, said WaveX’s reputation for reliable, high-speed connectivity made them a natural fit: “Together, we’ll help even more networks benefit from the performance and economic advantages of local peering.”

Cyrus Mbitao, CTO at WaveX, described the deal as an important milestone: “Through this partnership, we aim to extend world-class peering opportunities to networks across Kenya while contributing to the continued growth and resilience of the region’s digital ecosystem.”

The partnership arrives at a moment when Kenya is cementing its position as the leading digital hub in Africa. LINX is also preparing to launch its first IXP in West Africa later this year, signalling continued continental expansion. For smaller ISPs and regional networks in East Africa, WaveX’s reseller role at both Kenyan exchanges opens a more accessible path into LINX’s growing ecosystem, without the cost and complexity of establishing their own physical presence at the exchanges.
