The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has directed all television and radio stations to halt any live coverage of the ongoing June 25 anniversary protests taking place across the country.
In a notice issued earlier today, the regulator said the coverage is contrary to Articles 33 (2) and 31 (1) of the Constitution of Kenya and Section 461 of the Kenya Information and Communication Act, 1998.
”This is therefore to direct all television and radio stations to stop any live coverage of the demonstrations forthwith,” CA said.
Media houses have been warned against broadcasting footage or commentary related to the protests, with the CA stating that failure to comply could result in regulatory action.
The move comes amid growing demonstrations linked to the anniversary, which have drawn significant national attention.
The CA’s directive has triggered immediate backlash from journalists, media associations, civil society organizations, and the general public.
Critics argue that the move constitutes censorship and infringes on the public’s right to information, especially during a time of heightened political activity.
