Google's Year in Search 2024 for Kenya highlights the topics and trends that captivated Kenyans throughout the year
Each year, Google releases what Kenyans searched on their platform. The trends ranged from news, personalities, sports, entertainment, culinary interests, and popular questions.
The Social Health Authority (SHA), replacing the defunct NHIF, dominated Kenya’s top trending news this year as the new healthcare provider. The Finance Bill 2024, proposing tax law changes to address economic challenges, also generated significant interest.
Kenyans expressed concern over the Finance Bill 2024, which suggested higher taxes. Public protests, particularly from Gen Z, prompted the government to withdraw the bill. This year, the US Elections 2024 ranked third in Kenya’s top trending news.
Former Deputy President Gachagua, following his impeachment, topped the list of trending local personalities, followed by Cabinet Secretaries Rebecca Miano and Soipan Tuya. The top global personalities of 2024 included Jamaican star Vybz Kartel, US President-Elect Donald Trump, and televangelist Benny Hinn, whose “Healing the Nation” crusade in Nairobi marked his return to Kenya after two decades.
Kenyans’ love for football was evident this year, with AFCON in Ivory Coast and Euro 2024 in Germany dominating sports news. Interest also grew around the 2024 Olympics schedule.
The death of content creator Brian Chira in a hit-and-run accident in March was the most searched loss in Kenya, sparking widespread grief and tributes. Kenyans also searched for the deaths of actor Charles Ouda, known for his contributions to entertainment, and Rita Tinina, who died from severe pneumonia.
Kenyans explored diverse cuisines with searches for recipes like chicken curry and pumpkin soup, while “Supacell,” “Damsel,” and “Shogun” led the trending movies and TV shows. They also sought lyrics for popular songs such as “Anguka Nayo,” “Kudade,” and “Hit and Run.”
Other top-searched questions on Google, such as “how to check KCSE results 2023,” “how to update token meter,” and “what is Airbnb,” reflected Kenyans’ diverse interests and use of Search in 2024.
