Safaricom Upgrades Home Fiber Packages, Launches Gigabit Plan

With growing competition from local and international internet service providers and consumer pressure, Safaricom has upgraded its offerings under its Home Fiber program.

It’s worth noting that Starlink’s launch in Kenya has doubled the satellite internet user count.

Safaricom, Zuku, and Telkom in the Kenyan market primarily deliver services through underground cable and Wi-Fi connections, while Starlink’s internet is transmitted via satellite connections, making it more reliable and accessible, especially in underdeveloped remote areas lacking fiber optic infrastructure.

While keeping prices the same as before, Safaricom Home Fiber speeds now start from 15Mbps under the Bronze package to the new Platinum package which offers 1000Mbps.

This is a new plan and a first in Kenya which gives consumers Giga speeds for Ksh 20,000 per month.

Here are the new upgraded packages:

  • Bronze: 15Mbps – Ksh 2999
  • Silver: 30Mbps – Ksh 4100
  • Gold: 80Mbps – Ksh 6299
  • Diamond: 500Mbps – Ksh 12499
  • Platinum – 1000Mbps – Ksh 20,000

Family Share Plan

Safaricom has also introduced the Family Share plan to improve the time spent with your family. This comprehensive plan combines mobile voice, data, SMS, and home internet services.

Up to five household members can use the shared plan which offers a 20% discount on the bronze plan compared to purchasing Fibre and voice/data plans separately.

Business Fibre Plan

Safaricom has upgraded its Business Fibre plans for Enterprise customers, offering speeds up to 1 Gbps for Medium and Large Enterprises and higher speeds for Micro and Small Enterprises.

Medium and Large Enterprises can enjoy competitive Dedicated Internet plans with speeds up to 1Gbps, offering flexibility, reliability, and 99.99% uptime, along with features like 24/7 monitoring, burstability, and embedded security.

  • 15Mbps Shared Plan: For micro businesses with up to five users/devices. It comes with 5GB mobile backup data for uninterrupted operations and includes a 400-minute voice plan monthly for seamless communication.
  • 50Mbps Shared Plan: For small businesses with up to 15 concurrent users. It comes with 15GB of mobile backup data for uninterrupted operations during fibre cuts, along with a Closed User Group voice plan allowing unlimited voice communications for up to 3 users every month.
  • 100Mbps Shared Plan: For growing businesses with multiple locations, this plan supports up to 50 users/devices, ensuring strong performance for higher demands. It comes with 15GB of mobile backup data for uninterrupted operations and a Closed User group voice plan for 3 users.

Additionally, new customers signing up for the shared Businesses business plans of 15Mbps, 50Mbps, and 100Mbps will receive a one-time offer of 30GB mobile data bundle and a free email and website domain for the first year.

Safaricom reports that it expanded its Fibre network by over 3,000 kilometers last year, extending coverage to more than 17,000 kilometers across the country. This led to 110,000 new customers, including 370,000 homes and 32,000 businesses, now enjoying fast and reliable internet.

Safaricom says that it will conduct estate clinics, boost capacity in crowded areas, and offer competitive 4G and 5G options for homes in areas not covered by fiber.

“We have enhanced our Home Internet speeds to cater to the increased demand and usage by offering reliable connectivity and enhanced value for our customers. The introduction of the new speeds offers capability of handling the most demanding online activities with ease, including high-definition streaming 4K/8K, gaming, large file transfers, cloud computing, and virtual reality. We have also introduced family share which offers a converged internet and mobile solution for home that can be shared with up to five loved ones. We are keen to deliver a great experience and value by innovating to meet and exceed customer needs,” Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom PLC.

“The needs of our Enterprise customers are changing each day with the growing need to use technology. The enhanced fibre for business plans will allow our enterprise customers have a worry-free experience with the provision of back up data,” Mr. Ndegwa said.
