The Electric Mobility Sub-Sector within the Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) has elected Roam’s head of strategy and innovation Hans van Toor and Associated Vehicle Assemblers Ltd. (AVA) MD Matt Lloyd as its new Chair and Vice-Chair respectively.
This development aims to support Kenya’s goal of creating a more sustainable and future-proof electric mobility industry, emphasising the importance of local manufacturing and signalling a strong commitment to driving local value creation and clean industry jobs.
By focusing on building a sustainable electric mobility sector, this initiative also aims to spur both industrial growth and environmental sustainability, with the manufacturing sector playing a crucial role in this transformation due to its significant job creation potential.
This is by creating opportunities for SMEs and expanding sustainable industry jobs.
With the election of van Toor and Lloyd, KAM’s Electric Mobility Sub-Sector is set to prioritise local manufacturing and the development of a robust supply chain for electric vehicles and associated technologies.
This approach aligns with Kenya’s broader goal of increasing the manufacturing sector’s contribution to GDP, which currently faces challenges.
The new leadership will focus on strengthening local manufacturing to reduce Kenya’s reliance on imports and position the country as a regional leader in electric mobility.
KAM’s Electric Mobility Sub-sector Chair Hans van Toor expressed his excitement on his appointment stating that it is a pivotal time for electric mobility in Kenya.
“Today, Kenya is leading the sector in Africa. With the right policies, investments, and collaboration across the sector, Kenya can keep leading the charge in EV manufacturing,” he said.
The Sub-sector plans to work on establishing a legal framework and provide guidance on processes that will foster local industries.
This includes creating open participation platforms to ensure that all stakeholders in Kenya’s electric mobility manufacturing sector are represented, as it is important that not only a few stakeholders drive this roadmap.
“Kenya strives to enhance its global competitiveness, reduce transport emissions, and ensure that the electric mobility sector delivers sustainable economic benefits,” Toor added.
The new leadership team has affirmed its commitment to aligning the sector’s growth with Kenya’s long-term economic and environmental objectives, ensuring that the country is well-positioned to lead the way in the region’s electric mobility transition.
