Safaricom Bonga Points will now have an expiry date from January 2023
Starting January 1st, 2023, Safaricom’s loyalty program popularly known as Bonga Points will be expiring if not used up, in a move aimed at making the customer-reward initiative profitable for the company.
The program which has been around for more than a decade encourages customers to spend within the network. For Ksh 10 spent, customers get one point. The points accrued can be redeemed later for commodities including data bundles, SMS, airtime smartphones, aeroplane tickets, and even buying stocks at the Nairobi Stocks Exchange(NSE).
Over the years, some customers have accrued too many Bonga points that they don’t redeem. But Safaricom now wants them spent or they would expire.
In the changes that the telco has made, points will have a validity of 3 years and customers can check for accrued points, soon-to-expire points, and points that have expired by dialling the traditional code *126#.
There are still several unexplained aspects of the program such as what happens if someone transfers points to another customer.
The changes in the loyalty program will affect Bonga points accrued earlier than December 2019, and they should be spent before 31st December 2022.
