Safaricom and Faiba lead with fastest internet speeds in the country, report

A report by Ookla, a research firm that tracks internet speeds across the world has revealed that Safaricom and Faiba have the fastest upload and download speeds among leading internet service providers (ISPs) in the country.

The Speedtest Intelligence Q3 2022 report evaluated five service providers in the country, analyzing their performance on both mobile and broadband services. The companies, include Safaricom, Airtel, Telkom, Faiba,  Access Kenya, Liquid Home, and Unwired Communications.

The first part of the report presents findings of the mobile-based internet speeds from  Safaricom, Airtel, Faiba and Telkom. The other part analyzes broadband internet, which incorporates these telcos and other ISPs.

Safaricom leads its peers with a median download speed of 22.19mbps, followed by Airtel at 15.69mps, Faiba at 12mbps, while Telkom has the slowest internet speeds at 5.8mbps.

Among these telcos, Faiba has the lowest latency levels (delays in data transfer), followed by Airtel, Safaricom and Telkom respectively.

“In measuring the consistency of each operator’s performance, we found that there was no statistical winner for Consistency in Kenya during Q3 2022,” states the report, meaning that all providers have their good and poor performance periods at any given time.

In Q3, 2022 Kisumu recorded the fastest median mobile download speeds, followed by Mombasa, Eldoret, Nairobi and Nakuru respectively.

Among the fixed broadband providers, Faiba has the fastest median download speed at 25.66 mbps.

AccessKenya comes a distant second with a median download speed of 9.23 mbps, followed by Safaricom (8.19mbps), Liquid Home(7.09 mbps) and Telkom(6.81mbps).

Once again, Faiba demonstrated the lowest delays (latency) in broadband internet at about 14 minutes. AccessKenya recorded the worst latency level in broadband internet speeds, at a median of 29 minutes.

“Faiba had the highest Consistency in Kenya during Q3 2022, with 51.9% of results showing at least a 25 Mbps minimum download speed and 3 Mbps minimum upload speed,” the report elaborates.

Mombasa has the fastest download and upload speeds of broadband speeds at an average of 13mpbs in both parameters. The city recorded similar performance in Q2, 2022.

The findings highlight significant competitiveness among top providers for both mobile and broadband internet in the country.

The penetration of fast internet continues to spur digital growth across the continent but there is a need to accelerate uptake, particularly in the African interior. A recent survey found that only 55% of the African population has access to the internet.
