Bill Gates is planning to drop from the list of the world’s richest people
Bill Gates has expressed his desire to drop from the list of the world’s richest people.
In a Twitter thread on July 13, 2020, the co-founder of Microsoft said that he plans to give virtually all his wealth to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Subsequently, he “will move down and eventually off the list of the world’s richest people.” He wrote.
Over the years, Bill Gates has expressed his willingness to donate large chunks of his wealth to charity. He first made this pledge in 2010, but his wealth has almost doubled since then.
Forbes magazine says that Gates is currently worth 118bn. He has donated significant amounts of his wealth to the foundation, a charitable fund set up in 2000 that he has been running with his ex-wife.
Gates also said that the foundation has also benefited from donations from Warren Buffet, adding that its expenditure will move from $6bn a year to $9bn by 2026 due to recent “global setbacks” including the pandemic, Ukraine and the climate crisis.
“I have an obligation to return my resources to society in ways that have the greatest impact for reducing suffering and improving lives. And I hope others in positions of great wealth and privilege will step up in this moment too.” Gates wrote.
Bill Gates currently holds the position of the world’s fourth richest person. He topped the list between 1995 to 2010 and came back from 2013-2012. Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk is currently the holder of the top position.
