E-commerce giant Amazon is eyeing expansion to Africa by 2023
Global e-commerce giant Amazon is rumoured to have plans for extending its business to Africa by 2023, Business Insider reports.
This is part of the company’s expansion plans to other continents that including Africa and Europe as well as South America. Specific countries expected to be affected by this expansion include Belgium, Chile, Colombia, Nigeria, and South Africa.
According to Business Insider, the project codenamed Project Fela will start with South Africa in February 2023 and penetrate to Nigeria and Chile in April 2023.
“Belgium’s marketplace, called Project Red Devil, is slated for late September 2022 and the one in Colombia, dubbed Project Salsa, is scheduled for February 2023 ” the report reveals.
In line with this expansion, Amazon’s “Fulfillment by Amazon” will also be available in all those countries.
Amazon’s experience in the e-commerce space and the availability of a wide range of products could challenge smaller players in emerging markets.
The company already has a presence in Africa through its Amazon Web Service data center in Africa which was opened in 2020. This is posed to be its African headquarters.
The new development is part of the company’s post-Covid recovery plan, after a period of huge losses during the pandemic. The e-commerce company has also been slowing down on hiring, warehouse subleasing and limiting down ITS delivery network.
