Konza National Data Centre Cited as an Accelerator of Digital Transformation
ICT leaders at the annual Connected Summit 2022 have cited the Konza National Data Centre as an accelerator of digital transformation in the country, rallying stakeholders to leverage its offerings.
This comes in line with the proposal to accelerate the development of Konza Technopolis to promote cloud services and data management as highlighted in the Kenya National Digital Master plan 2022-2032. The master plan was unveiled by Cabinet Secretary ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs Cabinet Secretary (CS) Joe Mucheru at the summit on Tuesday.
The Principal Secretary (PS) of ICT and Innovation Jerome Ochieng’ says that the facility will play a critical role in supporting ICT solutions that are vital in building the country’s knowledge based economy and the ICT sector.
“One of our key elements, when we talk about digital economy, is the digital infrastructure which captures issues related with connectivity, end-user devices and data centres. The Konza Data Centre positions itself very well in the sense that it is already connected to the government common core infrastructure which will provide an opportunity as primary sites and recovery site,” said the PS.
He added that the facility has already attracted organisations and the government will utilize it to manage the growing demand of data related services in Kenya.
“This data centre plays a key role in accelerating our digital transformation and we are committed to supporting it. We all know that data grows every day and we all need a facility to manage our data,” added Ochieng.
The tier three data centre is open for both public and private organisations and presents opportunities on data isolation, storage and local hosting.
On his part, Eng. John Tanui, Chief Executive Officer, KoTDA, noted that the facility will offer many ICT benefits to organisations due to its attributes and the benefits.
“We are privileged to be hosting the national data centre which is a national facility to facilitate the acceleration of digital transformation. With the national data centre at Konza, we are able to offer cloud services for various users and we are looking forward to connecting various companies, both national and international, who are present here today.”
“We have started developing product offerings in partnership with several leading local and international technology and software providers to ensure that Data users can access them as a package,” added Eng. Tanui.
The Konza Data Centre is also hosting innovators solutions and leveraging their technology to grow innovation. In March last year, four start-ups that won the Konza Israel Innovation Challenge secured an opportunity to pilot their innovations at the Konza Technopolis in a bid to provide solutions for the residents and investors setting up at the smart city.
The annual Connected Summit brings together government and private organisations are to engage, share knowledge and find solutions to societies challenges through ICT. More than 25 organisations drawn from the ICT sector were represented in the conference.
